Gerontology Careers
Night
Submitted by Rita Cormier, SFU student representative
- Annual event where our
graduate caucus invites several guest speakers, including
alumni from our graduate program, to speak about their
work in gerontology-related careers.
- Provides gerontology
students with an excellent opportunity to learn about
prospective career paths and/or academic advancement.
- Event followed by an
informal reception that facilitates networking, informal
discussion, and exchange of information among
participants.
- If possible, we try to
invite speakers with different backgrounds i.e. academia,
government, private sector
- Encourage speakers to give
applied information i.e. information that equips students
with the knowledge and tips necessary to find
jobs/careers in aging.
- Other possible topics that
speakers could address:
- Current job
description and how it relates to field of
gerontology.
- Educational/career
background (i.e., how did they get to where they
are today).
- View of the job
market.
- Suggestions for
students entering the workforce.
- Allotted time per
speaker is approximately 15-20 minutes, including
time for questions
- Delegation of tasks among
caucus members:
- Apply for funding
from university or other sources.
- Book room,
including audiovisual equipment.
- Invite 3-4
speakers.
- Arrange the
catering.
- Advertise through
e-mail and posters.
- Buy gifts for
speakers.
- Compile handouts
I would
estimate that this event needs a minimum of $250 to cover
costs of gifts, travel expenses for speakers, and some
refreshments
Last year,
for the first time, we partnered with the Gerontology
Program to host a joint Gerontology Program Information
Session/Careers Night
Although
the Careers Night portion was originally targeted at
current gerontology students, we found that potential
students considering studies in the Gerontology program
were also very interested in learning about possible
career opportunities; as a result, the attendance well
exceeded expectations, with over 70 people attending our
event!

RESEARCH ON AGING:
NIBBLE, NOSH AND NETWORK. On March 19, 2004 there was a
round-table discussion and poster session that provided an
opportunity to meet faculty members and students who are involved
in aging-related research across the University of Alberta

to meet one's colleagues, discuss current activities, and
identify others with similar interests for possible future
collaboration. All faculty, students and research staff
interested in aging were welcome to attend. Participants were
invited to bring a poster. Refreshments were served. This event
was co-sponsored by the Alberta Centre for Gerontology, the U of
A campus faculty and student representatives for the Canadian
Association on Gerontology, and U of As Student Gerontology
