Abuse & Neglect of Older Canadians: Strategies for Change

We know that in Canada there are older persons who are being abused and neglected, and that very often this occurs 'behind closed doors', hidden and unspoken.

This raises many questions:

  • How to bring it out in the open?
  • How to support the older person, and how to stop the abuse and the neglect?
  • How to prevent it from happening?

There is no shortage of concern and effort among Canadians who have become aware of the problem: from service providers and teachers in health and social services, to policy makers and administrators of institutions, to researchers seeking to better the problem and determine what is effective in confronting it, to students, friends, and family members, and seniors themselves. There are no easy answers.

This books steps back to take stock of what we know and do not know, what is being done and what needs to be done about abuse and neglect of older people. Twenty-seven authors from across Canada have collaborated to bring together insight and analysis from their diverse perspectives: practice, education, policymaking and research. The overview that they set forth offers an opportunity for enriched understanding of this complex issue. Their recommendations provide valuable guides in our collective search for effective ways to confront the troubling reality of abuse and neglect of older Canadians.
